2-9-08 Why Beautiful People Have More Daughters by Alan S. Miller and Satoshi Kanazawa - Non-Fiction

3 - This started out interesting and then fell flat. Miller and Kanazawa make their argument that evolutionary psychology can explain everything from why humans have religion to why men beat their wives. Full of interesting facts and views, this is a good book but the authors arranged it so the reader could skip around; for the reader who reads it in order from beginnning to end, the constant references to prior chapters and subjects becomes more than a little irritating. Interesting but irritating read.

2-1-08 Something From the Nightside by Simon R. Green - Fiction

5 - I loved this. The first book in a series, Something From the Nightside introduces us to the Nightside, a place in London where it is always 3 am and a person can buy or sell anything. It's a place where magic is real and so are demons. Green uses dark humor and great descriptions to draw the reader into this world. By using a character who's never been to the Nightside, Green can take us on a great tour without needing chapters of lectures on location. I'm very much looking forward to the rest of his books.
